Planting: Acts

Acts 13:1-3 (ESV)

Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Study Guide Questions:

  • Who were some of the leaders in the church at Antioch, and what is surprising about their backgrounds?

  • What activities was the church in Antioch engaged in when the Holy Spirit spoke to them?

  • Why do you think the Holy Spirit chose to speak while the church was worshiping and fasting, rather than during a business meeting or planning session?

  • The church sent out their “very best”—Barnabas and Saul. What does this reveal about their trust in God and their understanding of mission?

  • The story of Tim Keller’s call to New York City involved a lot of reluctance and wrestling in prayer. Is there something you feel God might be calling you to do that feels uncomfortable or beyond your capacity? How can you begin to pray through your reluctance?

  • The Antioch church was made up of people from very different backgrounds, even people with scandalous or difficult pasts. Are there people in your life or church community you find it hard to connect with? What would it look like to pursue unity with them?

  • The church’s dependence on God was shown through worship, fasting, and prayer. What is one practical way you can express your dependence on God this week—maybe through fasting, extended prayer, or another spiritual discipline?
