Matthew 16:13-18 (ESV)

Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Study Guide Questions:

  • What does Jesus say about His church (v18)?

  • The “I” who will build the church is the living God. It is the Messiah. the creator who spoke everything into existence that builds the church. Do you have examples of this “I” ruling in your life?

  • Jesus’ question, “Who do you say I am?” is called the most important question of your life. If someone asked you that today, how would you answer honestly? Is there any area of your life where your actions don’t match your confession?

  • How might we be called to plant a church? What might your role be in this call to build the church? (E.g., how will you pray, get involved in church, or give so we can prepare to multiply?)

  • The sermon shared how Sunset Church’s story is rooted in the faithfulness of previous generations. Who are the people in your own faith journey who have helped you know Jesus? How can you honor or thank them this week?

  • The sermon called us to “participate, not just consume.” Are you currently serving or giving in the life of the church? If not, what is one step you could take this month to move from consumer to contributor?
