Rediscovering Rest

Joey Chen

We live in a world that rewards exhaustion. Most of us have quietly adopted Bon Jovi's anthem as a life philosophy: I'll sleep when I'm dead. The problem? We're dying faster because of it. Here's what nobody tells you: your rest habits are a theology test. The way you rest — or refuse to — reveals what you actually believe about God and your own limits.

Rest isn't a spiritual weakness. It's a daily act of surrender — a small, repeated declaration that God is God, and you are not. You don't have to wait until you're dead to rest.

About Joey:

Joey has been part of the Sunset Church family since 2007 — first as youth pastor, now as Lead Pastor. A Michigan native, he came to faith in high school and sensed a call to ministry while studying at Cedarville University. That call took him to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and eventually to a Doctor of Ministry from Talbot School of Theology, where his research focused on church multiplication in San Francisco.

Joey believes cities are one of the most strategic places for the Gospel — where "all peoples of the earth" converge. He's also learning that fruitful ministry is as much about abiding as it is about striving — that real growth, in people and in churches, is rooted in rest. He's grateful to do life and ministry in SF alongside his wife Jeannette and their two daughters.
